Captain Louie Synopsis

Young Louie feels lonely and without friends in his new neighborhood. Looking for something to cheer himself up on Halloween Night, Louie returns to his old neighborhood friends in an imaginary journey on the wings of his favorite toy, his little red plane. The story is full of tricks and treats, and the incomparable music and lyrics of Stephen Schwartz. Most of all, Captain Louie is about friendship -- the ability to make new friends and the importance of old ones.

Breakdown of Roles

Louie (Captain Louie)
Louie is a bright, imaginative, sensitive, generous, and somewhat shy kid. He is ready to help his friends whenever he can. As a new kid in a neighborhood, he feels lonely and without friends – both because teaching out to meet new people is hard, and because he misses the friendships he had made. Louie uses the strength of his imagination and generous nature to regain his self-confidence and help him make new friends.

AMY (Broom)
Amy is the perfect lieutenant: Faithful to her leader, willing to work, enthusiastic, energetic.

Archie / Angie (Flower
This role could be cast as either a girl or a boy.
Archie is the smallest, youngest, and most cautious member of the gang. He can be spooked by just about anything scary – Halloween decorations, dark streets, kids who might tell on the gang’s pranks, etc. Yet he has the inner strength to try things in the end.

Julio (Bat)
Julio is the picture of self confidence. As the new kid in Louie’s old neighborhood, he is the opposite of Louie. He is not afraid to come out and meet new people because it never occurs to him that he won’t be accepted. He had a quick sense of humor, and a strong-extroverted personality.

Roberta (Mouse)
Roberta is the boss. She makes the plans; she takes charge at every turn. She’s not mean or nasty, but in her front ”lead-or-get-out-of-the-way” style, she sometimes doesn’t pay as much attention to other people’s feelings as she should. She does have a genuine soft side, and it comes in her concern for Louie at the end.

Ziggy (Monster)
Ziggy is the biggest guy in the gang – the Little John of the group. He’s got a big frame, and he’s got to support it, which (no doubt) is why the center of this world is Oscar’s Candy Store. He’s always ready for a joke or a high five, but inside, he is covering a secret of his own that haunts and troubles him.

The Cat (Sack)
The Cat is – well – a cat. If she could speak she would be a true wise-cracker. She’s independent and a bit of a trickster, herself.

Ensemble: Kids from both Louie’s old and new neighborhoods
